User Generated-Ads
December 31, 2006 on 11:26 am | In Online Video, Advertising, UGC, Social Media | No Comments- Warner Independent Pictures tapped startup Jumpcut.com to run a contest to create a trailer to promote the film. Instead of having one movie trailer out, Warner Bros could have hundreds of movie trailers that are passed from friend to friend.
- JVC and vMix are co-sponsoring a video contest to be aired on Spike TV with a price of $2500.00 using the JVC Everio logos and images.
- I thought it will happen next year but it is happening this year-homemade commercial video ads appearing during Super Bowl
Ok before i go on and on let me take a step back and try to figure out/connect the dots/identify any emerging trends/.. etc. This represents a move of user-generated content into mainstream television - big time. So far UGC has been shown mostly on the Internet - with a few exceptions like Current TV.
User-generated advertising is a awesome way to measure user passion/pulse for a product, service or brand. The viral marketing factor comes to play and there is always the potential for spotting a Killer Ad by a genius lead user. Also diverse users could generate diverse ads for different locations, and in different languages in a very cost effective manner. I think user-generated ads will complement/supplement professional ads by agencies and advertising agencies have to learn to share the stage with amateurs.

Challenge- Cut the cable snaking into your TV
December 28, 2006 on 11:18 pm | In Online Video | No CommentsWired magazine is reporting a experiment on a family of five -life without a cable connection for 30 days. The rules as per article are: Anything I could download was fair game, but no TV signal via cable, satellite or the airwaves. Watching television that had been cached on the TiVo box is also cheating.
Check out the article for yourself - how the family goes from iTunes, to free legal streaming media of TV shows and to XBox live.
John Edward pre-announces on YouTube
December 28, 2006 on 10:23 am | In Online Video, Online platform, Social Media | No CommentsJohn Edwards announced (or pre-announced ) in a YouTube video that he is runnnig for President. In fact he has a public profile(Johnedwards) on YouTube with several other online videos. This is big news from a social media standpoint. And the big boys at the big media houses must be scrambling their heads- traditional media channels and outlets, all the logistics and preplanning are no longer needed to reach a critical mass- just upload your candidacy to YouTube. Infact through Newteevee i learnt that blogger Robert Scoble will be on John Edwards airplane blogging about the campaign.

The writings is on the wall- with broadband and internet video - social media will never be the same. The rules, politics, special interests, filters and censorship of big media no longer apply-just upload your message to the platform-and people can be the message. We are also seeing similar shifts of power in other industries-health, education, marketing, advertising, communication, etc.
Digital Platform to Film Festivals Worldwide
December 27, 2006 on 8:38 pm | In Distribution, Online platform, Digital Entertainment | 1 CommentWithoutabox allows independent filmmakers to easily submit their independently produced films to almost every film festival in the world, and to allow festival operators to easily accept those submissions, including fees, the film itself and all the associated promotional materials that make the festival experience a sweet one for both sides.

Withoutabox saves filmmakers the logistical details - laborious form-filing, submission protocols, regulations, fee details, etc - which might me diffirent for every FilmFestival depending on country, filmfestival etc. Brilliant idea - with Web2.0 and digitization creativity cannot be locked by the media moguls. Select few cannot cherry pick what shows up at film festivals. Any independent film maker can submit to any FilmFestival in the world- the process and plumbing details have been taken care - thanks to Withoutabox.
